“Okay. You’re starting to scare me. What are you talking about?”
Sean hesitated for a moment, then said the words that would change everything.
“What if we swapped partners with Nancy and Alex for a week?”
I stared at him.
For several seconds, I honestly thought he was joking.
Nancy had been my closest friend for almost twelve years. She had attended my mother’s funeral, helped me through a difficult period at work, and spent countless weekends sitting at my kitchen table, talking about everything from money to marriage.
Her husband, Alex, was someone Sean considered a friend.
We had gone on vacations together. We had celebrated holidays together. We had shared barbecues, birthdays, and countless ordinary evenings.
They were practically family.
And now my husband was suggesting that we exchange spouses as though we were trading cars for a weekend.
I let out a nervous laugh.
“That’s a terrible joke, Sean.”
