I thought about how easily all of us had treated the future of two marriages as though it were a game.
Then I opened the door.
A woman stood on the porch.
She was in her early forties, wearing a dark blue coat and holding a thick envelope.
Her expression was serious.
Behind her stood a man I recognized immediately.
He was someone Sean had told me he hadn’t spoken to in years.
The woman looked past me toward the living room.
“Are they all here?” she asked.
“Yes,” I replied.
She nodded.
“Good. Then we can finally stop pretending.”
I stepped aside.
She entered the house.
The moment Sean saw her, the color drained from his face.
Nancy stood so abruptly that her glass nearly fell from her hand.
Alex looked at the man behind the woman, then at Sean.
“What is going on?” he demanded.
Nobody answered.
The woman placed the envelope on the coffee table.
