I found myself remembering our wedding.
Sean had looked nervous when he saw me walking toward him.
After the ceremony, he had whispered that he wanted to grow old with me.
At the time, I believed him.
Perhaps he had meant it.
Perhaps people could sincerely love someone and still make selfish decisions.
I didn’t know.
But I knew that the promises we made in the past could not excuse what we did in the present.
At four o’clock, I received a message from Nancy.
“On our way! See you soon.”
I stared at the screen for several seconds.
Then I typed a simple response.
“See you soon.”
I had arranged one more thing.
Someone was coming to the house.
Someone Sean and Nancy did not expect to see.
Someone who had every reason to ask questions about the conversations taking place between the four of us.
I checked the time.
