Real business files.
Old payment ledgers.
Contractor names.
Vehicle maintenance invoices.
Things meaningless alone.
Dangerous together.
She knew because Adrian had taken her there.
“Why help us now?” I asked when we finally met with her through attorneys.
Vanessa looked exhausted.
Pregnancy had changed her face.
Or fear had.
“Because Adrian told me I was next.”
I stared.
“What?”
“After the bank failed.”
“He blamed me.”
“He said I talked too much.”
She swallowed.
“He said his father could make people disappear.”
I felt no sympathy at first.
“You watched me sink.”
Vanessa cried.
“I thought you would get out.”
“You saw Adrian leave me.”
“He said the restraint would release.”
“It didn’t.”
“I didn’t know that.”
“You smiled.”
Her face collapsed.
That detail mattered to her.
Good.
“I was scared.”
“No.”
“You were standing safely on shore.”
“I was the one underwater.”
Vanessa lowered her head.
Then she said:
“The baby is his.”
“I know.”
“He promised we’d leave Bellmere after the transaction.”
“I know enough.”
“I hated you.”
That surprised me more than an apology would have.
“Why?”
“Because you got everything.”
“Dad.”
“Noah.”
“Mercer Holdings.”
“People treated you like the real daughter.”
“And me like the woman his second wife brought into the house.”
I stared at her.
“You were twelve.”
“I helped raise you.”
“I know.”
“You could have told me.”
“I wanted your life.”
“So you tried to erase it?”
She had no answer.
Vanessa eventually gave investigators access information to the private archive.
No theatrical trap was required.
Search warrants did the rest.
Documents connected Adrian’s father to shell companies that had paid a mechanic shortly before our parents’ fatal crash.
The same mechanic was still alive.
Faced with financial records and old photographs, he cooperated.
He admitted the steering system on our parents’ vehicle had been deliberately compromised.
He claimed he had been told the goal was intimidation.
Nobody believed him.
Noah had been right for fourteen years.
Our parents had not simply died on a bad road.
Someone had arranged it.
And Noah had spent almost half his life pretending he couldn’t stand because surviving openly once had nearly gotten him killed.
Adrian’s father was arrested before dawn three days later.
Adrian’s charges expanded.
Conspiracy.
Attempted murder.
Fraud.
Administration of a harmful substance.
Evidence tampering.
Vanessa negotiated cooperation.
I did not ask what sentence she would receive.
