CHAPTER 19: THE DOCUMENTS THAT HELD
The investigations unfolded over months, not days. The lender ultimately withdrew the disputed guarantee and corrected its records after concluding that the submitted authorization was not valid. The contested property notice was removed through the appropriate process. The trust’s independent trustees rejected the attempted change of control and adopted additional verification safeguards. Grant’s company terminated his leadership role following its internal review, while authorities continued to assess the document submissions. I did not know whether every person involved would face a charge. I did know that the house remained mine, June’s trust remained protected, and the false papers no longer stood uncontested. The divorce settlement addressed the marital assets separately from the property I had owned before the marriage. It also established parenting arrangements that could be adjusted as circumstances and professional recommendations required. Grant was ordered to provide complete financial disclosures. His mother never apologized in writing, though she sent June a card with a photograph of herself and Oliver. June put it in a drawer without comment. I did not tell her how to feel about it. One morning Camille wrote to say she had enrolled Oliver in preschool and wanted him to grow up knowing that his existence had not caused a family to break. I replied that the children were not responsible for the adults’ choices. It was the simplest truth in the entire case.
