MY HUSBAND DI:ED IN A CAR CRASH — BUT A MONTH AFTER HIS FUNERAL, HIS BOSS CALLED AND SAID,

“I know.”

“You let me believe my husband died in an accident.”

“I know.”

“You watched me bury him.”

Sarah covered her face.

“I was trying to protect you.”

I shook my head.

“No. You were protecting a secret.”

She looked at me.

Then she said something I wasn’t expecting.

“I was protecting your life.”

Suddenly, headlights appeared outside the motel window.

A car stopped.

Sarah looked outside.

Her face changed.

“They found us.”

I grabbed the USB drives.

“What do we do?”

Sarah stood up.

“There’s a back door.”

We ran.

But before we reached it, the motel room door opened.

Daniel stood there.

He was holding a gun.

Sarah stepped in front of me.

“Don’t.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You should have given them the drive.”

Sarah shook her head.

“I won’t.”

Daniel raised the gun.

Then another voice came from behind him.

“Put it down.”

Marcus.

He was standing in the hallway.

Daniel turned.

For a second, nobody moved.

Then Marcus stepped forward.

“I have the original records.”

Daniel lowered his weapon slightly.

Marcus continued.

“And I sent copies to the police twenty minutes ago.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

Marcus looked at me.

“Emily, open the USB.”
