He was wearing a dark coat, and rainwater was dripping from his shoulders.

Sarah immediately stepped behind me.

Marcus stared at him.

“You weren’t supposed to come here.”

The man smiled.

“Neither were they.”

He looked directly at me.

Then at the USB drive in my hand.

“Give it to me.”

I held it tighter.

“No.”

He took one step forward.

Marcus moved between us.

“Leave her alone.”

The man laughed.

“Still pretending you’re protecting her?”

I looked at Marcus.

“What does he mean?”

Marcus didn’t answer.

The man did.

“Ask him who gave Liam the documents.”

I turned toward Marcus.

“Who?”

He looked down.

Then finally said:

“Me.”

I couldn’t believe it.

“You helped Liam?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you trap me here?”

“Because I knew they would come for you.”

I shook my head.

“Who are they?”

Marcus looked at Sarah.

Then back at me.

“The people Liam discovered.”

The man behind him suddenly reached for his pocket.

Marcus reacted immediately.

“RUN!”

Sarah grabbed my arm.

We ran.

We pushed through the hallway and rushed toward the elevators.

Behind us, I heard shouting.

Then a loud crash.

The elevator doors opened.

We jumped inside.

Marcus stayed behind.

I pressed the button repeatedly.

 

 

 

 

The doors closed.

Sarah was breathing heavily beside me.

I looked at her.

“Who was that man?”

She didn’t answer.

“Sarah.”
