My heart stopped.
For a moment, I couldn’t even breathe.
I stared at Max, searching his little face for any sign that he was making up a story.
“What did you see, sweetheart?” I asked softly.
His small fingers tightened around mine.
“I wasn’t supposed to see,” he whispered. “Daddy took me to get apple juice because you were sleeping. When we came back, we got lost.”
My stomach twisted.
“The hospital is really big,” he continued. “Daddy was asking a nurse where your room was, and I looked through a window.”
“What window?”
“The one with all the babies.”
The neonatal nursery.
I remembered it clearly. Lily had spent a couple of hours there after birth while the nurses monitored her breathing. Nothing serious—just routine observation before bringing her back to my room.
“What did you see there?”
Max swallowed hard.
“I saw a lady wearing blue clothes.”
“A nurse?”
“I don’t know.”
“What was she doing?”
“She picked up a baby.”
“Okay…”
“Then another lady came in with another baby.”
He looked directly into my eyes.
“They changed the name bracelets.”
The words hit me like freezing water.
Children imagined impossible things all the time.
Didn’t they?
I forced myself to smile.
“Honey, hospitals have to check babies all the time. Maybe you misunderstood.”
He shook his head so hard that his blond hair bounced.
“No.”
“What makes you so sure?”
“Because one baby had a pink rabbit.”
My smile disappeared.
Lily’s pink rabbit blanket.
The tiny embroidered rabbit Max himself had chosen months earlier.
No one else on the maternity floor had that blanket.
“I know because I picked it,” Max said. “The lady took our rabbit off one baby and put it on the other baby.”
I felt the room tilt.
It couldn’t be true.
There had to be another explanation.
“Did you tell Daddy?”
His expression changed.
“I tried.”
“What did Daddy say?”
“He said I watched too many superhero cartoons and babies all look the same.”
That sounded exactly like Ethan.
Practical.
Logical.
Certain.
I kissed Max’s forehead.
“You stay here for a minute.”
He caught my sleeve.
“You believe me?”
I hesitated.
“I believe that you believe what you saw.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“But Mommy…”
He whispered the next sentence so quietly I almost missed it.
“The baby looked at me.”
“What?”
“The baby with our rabbit.”
