My Ex Abandoned Our Twins for 13 Years—Then They Won Two Gold Medals and Handed Him an Envelope

CHAPTER 4: 4. The Quiet Walk Out

An awards coordinator approached and asked whether we needed a private room. I accepted before Grant could speak. We crossed the lobby together in an uneasy procession: two gold medalists, one exhausted mother, a father who had finally run out of practiced answers, his wife, and a boy discovering that his family history had missing pages. In the small conference room, I asked the twins to sit. Neither would. “We can leave,” I told them. “Your awards are yours. Nothing else has to happen today.” Jonah shook his head. “We wrote questions.” He unfolded a sheet of paper from the envelope. “We promised each other we’d ask them once if we ever got the chance.” Grant stared at the page. “What questions?” Miles answered. “Did you ever wonder if we were okay?” Grant looked at me for help. I refused to rescue him from the question. “Of course I did,” he said. “Then why didn’t you call?” Jonah asked. Grant glanced toward Celeste. She had gone pale. The silence that followed was more honest than anything he had said at the registration desk. I watched my sons learn a painful lesson: sometimes a person’s inability to answer is an answer.
