My Ex Abandoned Our Twins for 13 Years—Then They Won Two Gold Medals and Handed Him an Envelope

CHAPTER 15: 15. The Old Check

I found the original hundred-dollar check in the same folder as Grant’s letter. I had never cashed it. Back then I was furious, then too busy, then unwilling to let that small piece of paper become the center of our story. The twins asked whether I regretted keeping it. “No,” I said. “It reminded me to document things. But I regret some nights I let it make me feel small.” Miles studied the handwriting. “We didn’t put it in the envelope to embarrass you.” “I know.” Jonah leaned against the counter. “We thought he needed to see what he said.” I told them that the letter was evidence of a choice Grant made, not a measure of their value. They had heard that lesson before, but I said it again because repetition is part of parenting. Later, alone, I considered the younger woman I had been, terrified of bills and ashamed to ask for help. I wanted to reach back through time and tell her she would make it. Not easily. Not without mistakes. But she would watch two boys become thoughtful young men, and that would be worth more than any check.
