“And when that failed?”
“He may have intended to seek control through a guardianship or custody proceeding.”
I sat back.
“He wanted me declared unfit.”
“That appears to have been part of the plan.”
I remembered his threats.
His manufactured arguments.
His determination to portray me as irrational.
Every insult had served a purpose.
He wasn’t simply trying to silence me.
He was building a narrative in which nobody would believe me.
But he’d overlooked something.
A seven-year-old child’s backpack.
And a recorder smaller than my palm.
Two weeks after the arrest, Detective Hayes asked me to come to the station.
Rebecca stayed with Maya.
When I arrived, Hayes introduced me to an assistant district attorney named Rachel Sullivan.
They had obtained additional recordings and messages.
“We want you to understand a development in the investigation,” Sullivan said.
I sat across from them.
“Is Maya okay?”
“Nothing has changed regarding her medical safety. This concerns the alleged planning.”
