Silence.
Then Thomas spoke.
“There is something else.”
I waited.
“Adrian sent my office a packet of medical documents.”
My skin turned cold.
“What kind of documents?”
“They purported to show that Maya needed prolonged specialist treatment and that you were refusing to acknowledge her condition.”
For a moment, I couldn’t understand the words.
My husband had spent weeks insisting our daughter was perfectly healthy.
Meanwhile, behind my back, he’d been telling our attorney that she was seriously ill.
“Did you give him any money?”
“Absolutely not. The request didn’t satisfy the trust’s requirements. I informed him that additional independent verification would be necessary.”
I covered my mouth.
“Did he respond?”
“Not directly. But two days later, a woman claiming to be a medical consultant contacted my office.”
I knew before he said the name.
“Vanessa?”
“Vanessa Hale.”
A terrible silence filled the room.
Thomas continued.
“Elena, I kept every document and message.”
