My 16-year-old daughter stayed up all night sewing a dress for her classmate — the next morning, the girl’s mother asked, “Do you know why she really did it?”

I looked at the unfinished green fabric spread across her knees.

For a moment, I felt enormously proud of my daughter.

I thought I was witnessing a simple act of kindness.

I had no idea how much more there was to the story.

The Blue Cardigan That Meant Everything

As Lily worked on the dress, she reached for a blue cardigan hanging over the back of her chair.

I immediately recognized it.

It was the last piece of clothing Daniel had bought her before he died. He had chosen it a little too large, joking that she would eventually grow into it.

After his death, Lily began wearing it whenever she felt particularly sad. She had worn it while grieving, kept it close during difficult nights, and refused to part with it even when I suggested that it might be time to put it away.

It had become more than a cardigan.
