MY 14-YEAR-OLD SON GREW OUT HIS HAIR

The two of them run swab drives at the high school now. They stand at a folding table with cotton swabs and a hand-painted sign, signing up every classmate they can talk into it, growing the registry so the next family searching in the dark finds a match faster than Lily’s did.

Because they know, better than anyone, what one swab from one kid can do.

“You have no idea what your son has done,” Lily’s father said to me that day, in fear and grief and desperate hope.

I do now.

My son grew out his hair to make a sick girl feel like herself.

And then, when no one was looking, he quietly saved her life.
