But the laughter vanished two days later.
I returned to my living quarters after buying diapers and immediately noticed something was off. My travel bag was zipped slightly differently. The baby formula jars on the counter had been shifted.
And in the trash bin, I found two opened wrappers for sterile buccal DNA swabs.
Used.
I rushed up the back stairs into Grant’s room, locking the door behind me.
“Julian searched my room,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “He took DNA samples from Leo. Maybe from me, too.”
Grant went still. “DNA?”
“Why would he do that?”
“He’s looking for leverage,” Grant said, his eyes narrowing. “Either to accuse you of stealing, or to claim you brought an illegitimate child into this house to scam him.”
His gaze drifted down to Leo, who was sleeping peacefully beside him. Then Grant asked a question that caught me completely off guard.
