Julian took a step back. “That doesn’t prove a criminal case!”
“It proves motive,” Detective Vance countered smoothly.
Grant struck his cane against the floor.
“When you got those lab results, Julian, you had two choices. You could have walked into my room and told me I might have a family. Or you could go to Barragan and double the poison.”
Julian’s chest heaved. “You… you were unconscious…”
“No,” Grant said, staring his nephew dead in the eye. “I heard every single word.”
A suffocating silence fell over the room.
“I heard you ask Barragan how many days I had left,” Grant continued. “I heard you tell him not to transfer me to a hospital because ‘it would look more natural at home.’ I heard you debate what to do if I recovered my speech before you could liquidate the trust.”
Julian backed toward the hallway. “You have no legal right to detain me!”
