Someone else might find an old object that raises questions about where it came from.
The beach does not provide labels or explanations.
That is what makes discoveries so fascinating.
An object can arrive without warning, remain unnoticed for hours, and then catch the eye of someone walking past.
The ocean can hide objects for years
Water is incredibly powerful.
Waves can move surprisingly heavy materials, while currents can carry smaller objects over enormous distances. Sand can cover something completely, making it invisible until weather or tides uncover it again.
After storms, beaches can look completely different.
Sand may be removed from one section of the shoreline and deposited somewhere else. Rocks that were previously hidden can become visible. Objects buried beneath the surface can suddenly appear.
This is why experienced beachcombers often pay close attention after periods of strong weather.
The shoreline itself can become a kind of natural archive.
