“No.”
“Then what?”
“Marry him.”
I stared at her.
For several seconds, I genuinely wondered whether someone had hidden a camera in the room.
“You don’t know me.”
“I know enough.”
“That’s not comforting.”
“You have no criminal history. No significant debt beyond medical and household expenses. You have legal guardianship of your younger brother. You’ve held employment consistently since you were nineteen.”
My discomfort sharpened.
“You investigated me.”
“I verified suitability.”
“Call it whatever helps you sleep.”
She ignored that.
“In return for becoming Cole’s legal spouse, visiting twice monthly, maintaining correspondence, and appearing when his attorneys request it, you would receive twenty-five hundred dollars every month.”
My heart reacted before my pride did.
Twenty-five hundred.
My rent was fourteen hundred.
That money could keep Lucas in school.
Repair the car.
Replace the broken refrigerator.
Maybe allow me to stop choosing which bill got ignored every month.
