I took the paper from him.
“Enough time.”
“Mara.”
“Thirty days.”
His jaw tightened.
“How much?”
I didn’t answer.
That answered him.
He leaned against the wall.
“I can quit school.”
“No.”
“I can work full-time.”
“No.”
“I’m almost eighteen.”
“And you’re graduating.”
“We might not have an apartment by graduation.”
I folded the eviction notice into quarters.
“Then we’ll graduate somewhere else.”
He hated when I joked while scared.
Unfortunately, it was the only way I knew how to keep fear from eating me alive.
That afternoon, I was pouring coffee at the diner when my phone vibrated in my apron.
Unknown number.
I ignored it.
It called again.
Then a third time.
During my break, I answered.
“Is this Mara Ellis?”
“Yes.”
“My name is Patricia Wren. I work for Evelyn Mercer.”
The name meant nothing to me.
“She would like to speak with you regarding a private financial arrangement.”
