Three years of Lucas graduating, starting community college, and still helping me sort records at our kitchen table.
Three years of Evelyn’s checks arriving every month.
At some point, I stopped thinking about them.
At some point, I also stopped pretending Cole was just paperwork.
I knew the exact moment.
It happened during a winter visit.
Cole looked thinner than usual.
He had received bad news about the appeal and was trying to act unaffected.
“You should leave,” he said.
I frowned.
“Visiting hours aren’t over.”
“I don’t mean today.”
My chest tightened.
“What are you talking about?”
“Divorce me.”
“No.”
“Mara.”
“No.”
“My mother can continue helping you.”
“I don’t want her money.”
His eyes searched mine.
“Then why are you still here?”
That question terrified me.
Because suddenly I knew.
Not sympathy.
Not obligation.
Not habit.
Love.
Messy, inconvenient, deeply unwanted love.
I leaned closer to the glass.
