I Introduced My Dad To My Fiancé At Our Wedding — But The Second He Saw His Face, He Went White And Whispered, “No… I Was Sure You Disappeared 30 Years Ago!”
PART 1
I thought the hardest part of my wedding day would be holding back tears before I even reached the altar.
More than anything else, I wanted my father to be the one walking me down that aisle. He’d raised me entirely on his own, from the time I was barely old enough to remember my mother’s face, since she’d left when I was three and never once came back.
Dad never complained about any of it. Not the school mornings he spent clumsily braiding my hair before work. Not the years of night shifts at the plant so he could pick me up from school himself. Not the nights he sat on the edge of my bed with a cool washcloth whenever a fever kept me up past midnight.
“Your life is going to be better than mine, Addie,” he used to tell me. “I’ll make sure of it.”
My fiancé, Miles, had only met him a handful of times, all of them over video calls with a connection that froze more often than it held. We’d been living overseas for three years by the time the wedding finally came together, and coordinating time zones between Kestrel Bay and wherever we happened to be that month had never been simple.
When we flew home the week of the wedding, Dad came down with a fever bad enough to miss the rehearsal dinner entirely.
