I got on a plane to my mother’s hospital and my husband was eleven rows in front of me with my best friend. There was a note of hers in my handbag that she’d written on my fridge that morning.

And he put the phone in his pocket.

He looked at me for a moment and then he said: “Yeah. Fair enough.”

And he went and sat on the wall by the shed for about twenty minutes and then he got a glass of water, which I saw him do and did not think about once.

I told Saskia. That is the other half of it and I did not remember it until that Premier Inn at one in the morning.

I went and found my best friend at a barbecue and told her that her husband had tried to show me something on his phone and that I had shut it down.

And Saskia Verrall said: “Oh God. I’m so sorry, Fran.”

And she went and found him.

And he put the phone away.

Dev Verrall tried once, at a party, in front of twenty-five people, and the woman he was trying to help took the phone out of his hand and told the crowd he was drunk.
