The woman upstairs was no longer someone I intended to protect as my wife.
The following morning, Wendy came downstairs wearing designer sunglasses and carrying her handbag. She casually announced that she was going downtown to shop, apparently believing the previous night had changed nothing.
“With what money?”
She smirked.
“Our money, darling.”
Before Wendy reached the front door, her phone rang. Within seconds, the confidence disappeared from her face as someone on the other end informed her that her card had been declined.
“What do you mean the card is declined? Try it again!”
She pulled out another card and tried it. That one failed too, followed by a third.
Wendy spun toward me.
“What did you do, Luca?!”
I calmly placed my coffee mug on the island.
“Protected family assets.”
“You can’t freeze my accounts!”
“They aren’t your accounts, Wendy.”
She insisted that half of everything in the house belonged to her. I explained that whatever marital property was legally divisible could be addressed later, but the trust had existed before our marriage and Mom’s stolen retirement money was now part of an active investigation.
For the first time in six years, Wendy looked genuinely frightened.
Then anger replaced fear.
She stepped forward and slapped me across the face.
Mom witnessed it from the hallway.
What Wendy didn’t notice was the hidden camera above the foyer.
It witnessed everything too.
Part 3: The Evidence at the Door
Less than twenty minutes after Wendy slapped me, the doorbell rang. She froze in the entryway as I opened the front door and found two uniformed police officers standing beside an Adult Protective Services investigator and a bank fraud specialist carrying a thick document case.
Wendy recovered almost immediately and slipped back into the confident role she had been playing for months. She stepped toward the officers, smoothed her hair, and spoke as though she were relieved that someone had finally arrived to deal with my unreasonable behavior.
“Officers, thank God you’re here. This is an absurd misunderstanding. Luca is upset because his senile mother had a fall while he was out of town.”
The investigator walked past Wendy into the foyer without responding to her performance. Then she delivered the one sentence Wendy clearly hadn’t expected to hear.
“Mrs. Mercer, we have the cloud video footage.”
The color disappeared from Wendy’s face. I placed my phone on the kitchen island and played the recording I had recovered from the backup security system.
