I came home early hoping to surprise my mother and wife, but what I saw in the kitchen stopped me in my tracks. Mom was in:ju:red, shaking with hunger, and desperately eating scraps while my wife relaxed nearby, laughing over a glass of wine. “She’s just being dramatic,” my wife said. I looked at the marks on my mother, quietly locked the front door, and whispered, “Enjoy that wine. By tomorrow, you may have nothing left to celebrate.”

Mom was safe.

She was eating because she was hungry, laughing because she felt like laughing, and sitting in a home where nobody controlled her.

For years, Wendy had mistaken patience for weakness.

In the end, patience had given me time to collect every document, preserve every transaction, uncover every recording, and place the truth into the hands of people who could act on it.

But more importantly, it had helped me bring my mother home.

This time, to a home where she was finally free.
