“Every Day for a Year, a Stray Dog Sat at My Son’s Grave — The Day I Followed It Home, I Understood Why”

Jasper hadn’t chosen a random grave.

He hadn’t been wandering.

He had been visiting someone he loved.

Just like I had.

Beau wandered back into the room holding two crackers.

He climbed beside Sadie.

Then he studied me.

“Mommy says my daddy was funny.”

I laughed through my tears.

“He was.”

Beau smiled.

“Did you know him?”

I looked at Sadie.

She nodded.

I crouched in front of him.

“I knew him very well.”

“How?”

My voice broke.

“Because he was my little boy.”

Beau considered that carefully.

Then his face brightened.

“So you’re my grandma?”

I couldn’t speak at first.

I simply nodded.

He leaned forward and hugged me.

It was clumsy and immediate.

One small arm wrapped around my neck while the other still held a cracker.

I closed my eyes.

For three years, I had believed the accident took every future version of Caleb away from me.
