Finn was sitting on the living room rug, playing with a soft stuffed elephant.
He wore a little short-sleeved outfit.
I could see the faint scars on his upper arm.
Megan noticed me looking and grew tense.
For a second, I could see the old fear returning.
I knelt beside Finn.
“Look at those little arms,” I said, smiling. “He’s getting so big.”
Finn laughed and waved his elephant at me.
Megan watched us for a moment.
Then her shoulders relaxed.
“He’s growing out of everything,” she said.
I chuckled.
“That’s what babies do.”
A little later, Megan asked whether I’d hold him while she finished making dinner.
I picked him up and settled into the chair by the window.
He grabbed my finger with his little hand and studied my face.
For nine months, I’d thought Megan was hiding my grandson from me because she didn’t want me in his life.
