She had prepared my favorite dinner.
As we sat around the table, my daughter said something I will never forget.
“Mom, when I was little, you always told me you’d do anything to protect me. Now I’m grown up. And I want you to let us take care of you, too.”
I took her hand.
“But promise me one thing.”
“What is it, Mom?”
“Never again decide behind my back what truth I can or cannot handle.”
They both agreed.
Today, almost a year has passed since that incident.
I’m continuing my treatment and attending regular checkups.
Michael and Emily no longer have secret meetings.
And that photograph, which nearly destroyed our family that night, now stands on a shelf in our living room.
When I look at it, I no longer see betrayal.
I see two people who were so terrified of losing me that they tried to protect me in the wrong way.
