Although many eye conditions can cause vision changes, sudden unexplained visual loss should be treated seriously, particularly when accompanied by dizziness, weakness, or difficulty speaking.
It is also important not to assume that a problem is harmless simply because it affects only one eye.
What to do: Seek emergency evaluation for sudden vision loss, double vision, or another abrupt visual disturbance. Do not drive yourself to the hospital.
- Sudden Dizziness, Loss of Balance, or Trouble Walking
Feeling dizzy occasionally can have many causes, including dehydration, medication effects, and inner-ear problems. However, sudden severe dizziness accompanied by difficulty walking or loss of coordination can be a warning sign of a stroke.
A person may suddenly veer to one side, stumble without an obvious reason, or feel unable to stand steadily.
Some strokes affect areas of the brain involved in balance and coordination. These events may not always produce the familiar facial drooping or arm weakness people associate with strokes.
