“Good evening, officers.”
His eyes moved between them.
“Is there a problem?”
Daniel answered.
“We received a 911 call from this address.”
Thomas’s smile changed almost imperceptibly.
“A 911 call?”
“A child in danger.”
For a fraction of a second, Thomas’s face tightened.
Then the expression disappeared.
“That must be a mistake.”
María watched him.
“My daughter is asleep upstairs,” he continued.
His voice was steady.
Too ready.
María kept hers neutral.
“We need to see her.”
Thomas remained in the doorway.
“She’s tired.”
He gave a short, uncomfortable laugh.
“I really don’t want strangers waking her up and upsetting her.”
María did not move backward.
“We need to see her now.”
Thomas shifted his weight.
The movement was small.
But it changed the shape of the doorway.
He was no longer simply standing there.
He was using his body to limit access.
Then a sound came from inside.
A whimper.
Small.
High.
From the staircase.
Daniel looked past Thomas.
So did María.
At the top of the stairs stood a little girl.
Pale pink pajamas.
Bare feet.
A stuffed rabbit clutched against her chest.
She looked about eight.
Exactly the age dispatch had given them.
Her cheeks were blotched from crying.
Her eyes were swollen.
One pajama sleeve had slipped down her shoulder.
There was nothing dramatic about her appearance.
No theatrical sign announcing what had happened.
Just a frightened child standing completely still.
“Daddy,” she whispered.
Thomas looked up.
His expression changed.
Not much.
But enough.
“Emily.”
His voice was low.
“Go back to bed.”
Emily flinched.
María saw it immediately.
The command had not been loud.
The child reacted as though volume did not matter.
María stepped across the threshold.
“Emily, sweetheart.”
The girl looked down at her.
“I’m Officer López.”
Emily’s eyes moved to Daniel.
Then back to María.
“You’re not in trouble.”
That mattered.
Children in dangerous homes often believed that calling for help was itself something they would be punished for.
“Can you come down to me?”
Emily looked toward her father.
Thomas stared upward.
The stuffed rabbit tightened in the child’s hands.
One cloth ear twisted around her fingers.
Daniel’s radio came alive.
Claire’s voice.
“Unit 12, be advised, caller stated, quote, ‘Daddy says it’s our secret.’”
Daniel’s face changed.
Not dramatically.
His focus narrowed.
“Mr. Miller.”
