“20 Minutes Ago in Arizona, Savannah Guthrie Was Confirmed as…” — What We Know and Why This Headline Matters
A dramatic headline is circulating online claiming that “20 minutes ago in Arizona, Savannah Guthrie was confirmed as…”
The unfinished sentence is doing a lot of work.
It creates suspense, encourages readers to click, and leaves enough unanswered that people may fill in the blank with their own assumptions. But when a headline concerns a well-known journalist and a major ongoing investigation, accuracy matters far more than suspense.
Savannah Guthrie, the longtime Today anchor, has been dealing with an extraordinarily difficult personal situation involving the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie, in Arizona. The case has attracted national attention and remains an active investigation.
As of the latest reliable reporting available, however, readers should be extremely cautious about treating an unexplained “confirmed as…” claim circulating on social media as an official announcement.
