My Widowed Father Took Every Woman to the Same Restaurant — None Ever Called Him Again, So I Finally Asked the Waitress Why
After my mother died, my father changed in ways I didn’t expect.
He became quieter.
Not sad exactly—at least not all the time. More like someone who had suddenly forgotten what to do with all the empty hours in his day.
My parents had been married for forty-two years. They did almost everything together. Grocery shopping. Sunday walks. Doctor’s appointments. Morning coffee.
Even when they weren’t talking, they were comfortable sharing the same room.
Then, almost overnight, Dad was alone.
For the first year, nobody mentioned dating.
We were all simply trying to help him adjust.
Then one evening, during dinner, Dad surprised me.
“I think I might start meeting people again,” he said.
I nearly dropped my fork.
“Dating?”
He smiled awkwardly.
“I suppose that’s what people call it.”
